Hymyilevä Oulu 26 – yhdessä kohti kulttuuripääkaupunkivuotta

Kun Oulu valmistautuu Euroopan kulttuuripääkaupunkivuoteen 2026, me Hymyilevä Oulu 26 -tiimissä teemme innolla töitä, jotta kaikki olisi valmista heti vuoden alussa. Tämä projekti on minulle enemmän kuin hanke – se on tapa yhdistää ihmisiä, kertoa tarinoita ja tuoda esiin sitä iloa, jonka yksi aito hymy voi synnyttää.
Hymyilevä Oulu 26 kokoaa yhteen monia asioita, joihin uskon: valokuvakilpailun, valokuvakurssin, kansainvälisen juhlagaalan, näyttelyt sekä uudet monikieliset verkkosivut, jotka kuljettavat tarinoita ihmisistä ja hymyistä yli rajojen. Hankkeen taustalla on Augmenters-kulttuuriyhdistys, jonka perustin Riogordon kulttuurikylässä Andalusiassa. Olemme jo vuosia yhdistäneet suomalaisia ja espanjalaisia taiteilijoita, ja nyt tuomme tämän kokemuksen Oulun kulttuuripääkaupunkivuoteen.
Valokuvakurssi – oppimista ja oivalluksia kaikille
Halusin, että kilpailua täydentää jotain, mikä antaa ihmisille työkaluja ja innostaa osallistumaan. Siksi järjestämme kaikille avoimen ja maksuttoman valokuvakurssin, joka käynnistyy 1.1.2026. Kurssi on kokonaan digitaalinen, ja siihen voi osallistua mistä tahansa – se tekee siitä esteettömän ja helposti saavutettavan.
Kurssin opettajana toimii AI-Kristian, tekoälyopettaja, joka pohjautuu omaan tapaani opettaa valokuvausta. Olen halunnut tehdä oppimisesta mahdollisimman helppoa ja innostavaa, siksi AI-Kristian antaa vinkkejä rennosti ja useilla kielillä. Kurssi ei keskity teknisiin asetuksiin, vaan siihen, miten kuvaan saadaan tunne: valon ja varjon leikistä, taustan merkityksestä ja mallin kunnioittavasta kohtaamisesta. Olen huomannut, että jo pienet oivallukset voivat muuttaa koko kuvan – ja sitä haluan jakaa eteenpäin.
Olemme panostaneet esteettömyyteen: kurssin verkkosivut täyttävät WCAG 2.1 AA -tason vaatimukset. Se tarkoittaa selkeitä kontrasteja, alt-tekstejä kuville ja ruudunlukijoiden tukea. Jokainen voi siis oppia valokuvausta omalla tavallaan ja omassa tahdissaan.
Juhlagaala – tarinoiden ja hymyjen juhla
Kesäkuussa 2026 koittaa erityinen hetki, kun kokoonnumme yhteen juhlimaan. Hymyilevä Oulu 26 -juhlagaala järjestetään keskiviikkona 10.6.2026 Pohjankartanon auditoriossa ja ala-aulassa. Siellä juhlistamme valokuvakilpailun voittajia ja avaamme näyttelyn, joka tuo esiin kaikkein koskettavimmat ja puhuttelevimmat kuvat.
Gaalassa haluan yhdistää taiteen, keskustelun ja yhteisön. Ohjelmassa on selkokielinen paneeli, jossa pohdimme vähemmistöjen ja yksinäisten kokemuksia sekä etsimme yhdessä ratkaisuja syrjäytymisen vähentämiseksi. Lavalle nousee myös vähemmistötaustaisia esiintyjiä, jotka tuovat iltaan musiikkia ja esityksiä. Lisäksi kansainväliset kumppanimme lähettävät omat tervehdyksensä.
Tapahtuma striimataan, jotta siihen voi osallistua myös etänä. Esteettömyys on minulle tärkeää, ja siksi Pohjankartanon sali on valittu huolella: siellä on pyörätuolipaikat, induktiosilmukka ja avustajien maksuton sisäänpääsy. Haluan varmistaa, että jokainen voi olla mukana.
Näyttelyt – Oulusta Espanjaan ja takaisin
Gaalan jälkeen valokuvanäyttely lähtee kiertämään kuuden kuukauden ajaksi ympäri Oulua. Haluamme viedä näyttelyt paikkoihin, jotka ovat helposti saavutettavia ja joissa esteettömyys on huomioitu. Villa Victor ja Pohjankartano ovat jo varmistuneet, ja kartoitamme parhaillaan lisää tiloja.
Samaan aikaan Etelä-Espanjan Riogordossa järjestetään oma kilpailu, ja sen parhaat kuvat kootaan näyttelyksi. Tärkein ajatus on, että Suomi ja Espanja vaihtavat teoksia – näin syntyy visuaalinen vuoropuhelu, joka näyttää, miten hymy ja toivo voivat yhdistää ihmisiä yli rajojen. Tämä on se hetki, jolloin kansainvälinen yhteistyö konkretisoituu kuvien kautta.
Katse kohti 1.1.2026
Hymyilevä Oulu 26 on meille enemmän kuin projekti – se on liike, joka kasvaa kohti vuoden 2026 alkua. Kilpailu kutsuu mukaan, kurssi antaa välineitä, gaala kokoaa yhteen ja näyttelyt vievät tarinat eteenpäin.
Valmistelut etenevät loistavasti: aikataulut pitävät, yhteistyö syvenee ja innostus kasvaa päivä päivältä. Kun uusi vuosi koittaa, olemme valmiita avaamaan oven hymyjen, kohtaamisten ja tarinoiden vuoteen.

Smiling Oulu 26 – together towards the Capital of Culture year
As Oulu prepares for its year as the European Capital of Culture in 2026, we in the Smiling Oulu 26 team are working with great excitement to make sure everything is ready when the year begins. For me, this project is more than just a program – it is a way to connect people, to share stories, and to highlight the joy that one genuine smile can bring.
Smiling Oulu 26 brings together everything I believe in: a photo competition, a photography course, an international gala, exhibitions, and new multilingual websites that will carry stories of people and smiles across borders. Behind the project is Augmenters Cultural Association, which I founded in the cultural village of Riogordo in Andalusia. For years we have connected Finnish and Spanish artists, and now we are bringing this experience to Oulu’s Capital of Culture year.
Photography course – learning and inspiration for everyone
I wanted the competition to be complemented by something that would give people tools and encourage them to participate. That is why we will organize a free, open photography course starting on January 1, 2026. The course is fully digital, so anyone can join from anywhere – making it accessible and easy to reach.
The course will be led by AI-Kristian, an AI teacher based on my own way of teaching photography. I wanted learning to be simple and inspiring, so AI-Kristian shares tips in a relaxed style and in several languages. The course does not focus on technical settings, but on how to create feeling in a photo: through light and shadow, the importance of background, and a respectful approach to the model. I have seen that even small insights can transform a picture – and that is what I want to share.
Accessibility has been a priority: the course website meets WCAG 2.1 AA standards, which means clear contrasts, alt text for images, and support for screen readers. Everyone can learn photography in their own way and at their own pace.
Gala – a celebration of stories and smiles
June 2026 will bring a very special moment when we gather to celebrate. The Smiling Oulu 26 Gala will be held on Wednesday, June 10, 2026 at Pohjankartano’s auditorium and lobby. There we will honor the winners of the photo competition and open an exhibition featuring the most moving and powerful images.
For me, the gala is about combining art, dialogue, and community. The program will include a plain-language panel discussion exploring the experiences of minorities and lonely people, and looking for solutions to reduce exclusion. We will also welcome minority-background performers who will bring music and performances to the evening, and our international partners will share their greetings.
The entire event will be streamed so people can join remotely. Accessibility is essential: Pohjankartano has wheelchair spaces, an induction loop, and free entry for personal assistants. I want to make sure that everyone can be part of this event.
Exhibitions – from Oulu to Spain and back
After the gala, the photo exhibition will travel around Oulu for six months. We want the exhibitions to be shown in places that are as accessible as possible. Villa Victor and Pohjankartano are already confirmed, and we are mapping more venues.
At the same time, in Riogordo, Spain, we will organize a local photo competition, and its best works will form an exhibition. Finland and Spain will then exchange selected works – creating a visual dialogue that shows how smiles and hope connect people across borders. This is where international cooperation becomes real, through the images themselves.
Looking ahead to January 1, 2026
Smiling Oulu 26 is more than a project – it is a movement growing towards the beginning of 2026. The competition invites people to join, the course gives tools, the gala brings us together, and the exhibitions carry the stories forward.
Preparations are going wonderfully: schedules hold, partnerships deepen, and enthusiasm grows every day. When the new year arrives, we will be ready to open the door to a year of smiles, encounters, and stories.
