Hymyilevä Oulu 26 is a photography project that aims to increase understanding, visibility and inclusion in the lives of minorities and people experiencing loneliness. We want to highlight small but meaningful glimpses of light in everyday life – moments that can arise from a friendly encounter, a shared laugh or even a dog hug.

Our goal is to create a safe and accepting space where everyone can share their story and be seen for who they are.
Photography has become commonplace and accessible to everyone, which is precisely why it is an excellent tool for building connections.

Our project is based on a strong belief that community, diversity and acceptance can change the direction of life. We focus on a positive approach, highlighting how community support and human encounters can bring hope even in the midst of difficult experiences.

The goal is to generate discussion about the genuine encounter between minorities, lonely people and the majority population, and to provide opportunities for new friendships and understanding.

Photography is more common than ever today – it is a part of everyday life and communication, a natural way for many of us to share observations, feelings and moments. That is precisely why it also serves as an excellent tool for social debate.

Hymyilevä Oulu 26 is a low-threshold project that encourages people to stop and look at the world around them from a new perspective. Photography does not require expensive equipment or special skills – just the desire to see and be seen.

We want to challenge people to reflect on what is good in their lives, and at the same time encourage them to encounter diversity – for example, could we ask a representative of a minority to be a model for a photo?
It is from such encounters that new friendships and deeper understanding can arise.

Although society is more open than before in many ways, fears and prejudices still exist. Exclusion, loneliness, bullying and fear of being different are real problems. We want to create a space where small, positive moments can remind us that fundamentally people are not that different – not in Oulu, not anywhere else in the world.

Hymyilevä Oulu 26 is not just a photo competition. It is an invitation to see each other, understand each other, and build a more communal, empathetic, and brighter future together.
